The Cog Railway Nature Trip

The trip Diakopto – Kalavrita with the cog railway is absolutely something worth seeing during your visit to Kalavrita!
The cog railway leaves from the rail station of the coastal city of Diakopto and travels along the gorge of River Vouraikos. The route lasts one hour, is bout 22,350 m. long and ends at the city of Kalavrita, at an altitude of 750 m. Crossing 49 bridges and passing through extremely beautiful landscapes, the railway has fairly been qualified as “a remarkable technical project”, with ground installations that constitute “historical monuments”.
The construction works began in 1889 and were inaugurated 7 years later, on March 10th 1896. The truck gauge is 75 cm, which is the narrowest in Europe. The cog straightedge has a total length of 3.400 m. and the inclination in the cog straightedge parts is 175%.

The cog railway has three itineraries a day and five on weekends with the new Swiss Stadler trains.
